Rafael Coronel - Tastuán y la Niña de Jerez
The work of Zacatecan painter Rafael Coronel is mysterious, dark, and beautiful. Classically trained, Rafael Coronel referred to his work as coming from the Umbrian School in Italy, noting both his classical training and his storytelling.
He would find his subjects on the street and in a style referred to as expressionistic realism, would create an opera's worth of characters. His work often showed faces from old masters works among the subjects.
This work is a gicleé on canvas, a high-quality reproduction of Coronel's masterpiece, Tastuán y la Niña de Jerez, painted in 1998. The original oil on canvas is on permanent display at the Rafael Coronel Museum in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The painting has been chosen as one of ten works of fine art that represent Mexico's culture.
